Research Projects
Automatic Document Classification
Machine learning techniques can be used for a number of applications. We are interested in learning how they an be best used in automatic document classification. The idea is to aid or simply replace the boring tasks of assigning documents to particular categories. We are looking at how to make the machine learning algorithms scalable, precise and efficient.
Intelligent Business Applications
We are looking at how to add intelligence to business applications. This normally involves using machine learning techniques in a new domain. Some projects we are working on include:
-
Language Technologies forthe Capital Markets.
Through the Capital Markets CRC we are building intelligent tools for the Australian Stock Exchange and others.
-
E-Learning.
Through collaboration with the Innovation in Technology Education Ventures we are looking at how Universities can improve the quality of learning outcomes using technology. With the Sloan School of Management at MIT, the University of Heidelberg, Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia (UNED) and other we are working on dotLRN, a new open source Learning Management System.
-
Knowledge Management.
We are working on adding intelligence to knowledge management tools that require management of large amounts of documents. This includes content and workflow management systems.
Web application frameworks
Web application frameworks are software engineering artifacts that improve reusability of design and implementation. They are tools to make large, complex websites. We collaborate with several open source projects including openacs, dotLRN and MASON
- Text Mining System
- BOSSS Mobile epidemiological surveillance - with the Australian Biosecurity CRC
- Biomedical data mining applications
- dotFolio: learning with portfolios.
- Social Networks in e-learning
- Beehive: Application framework for collaborative learning.
- Curriculum Central: Knowledge Management for educational institutions.
- LORS: Learning Object repositories
- Oak: Model driven web-applications.
